Opera Il Trovatore at Bob Jones University

The Bob Jones University Opera Association presents a new, modernized production of Verdi's Il Trovatore, March 13, 15, 17 at 8 p.m., Rodeheaver Auditorium, Bob Jones University campus, Greenville. Set in 1914 Spain, this production is directed by Darren Lawson, conducted by Stan Eby and designed by Jeff Stegall. Guest artists include James Taylor as Manrico, Laquita Mitchell as Leonora, Mary Phillips as Azucena and Mark Walters as Count di Luna. The artists’ studios will be open, so visitors can look at art, talk with the artists and maybe learn some new techniques. Join master North Carolina woodworker Elia Bizzarri for a week-long Windsor chair workshop, Sat. March 17th, through Fri. March 23rd. Students will learn to build a continuous arm Windsor chair (valued at $800) with hand tools. The class will be held at the American College of the Building Arts' 1725 Signal Point Road James Island Campus daily from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost is $475 plus $175 for materials. The American College of the Building Arts will hold its 8th Annual Masters of the Building Arts Festival Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m - 5 p.m. at the Old Charleston Jail campus on 21 Magazine St. The event celebrates the extraordinary skill and artistry of master craftspeople and will feature demonstrations in the school’s six areas of study: stone carving, masonry, ironwork, plasterwork, carpentry, and timber framing; Midwest Tool Collectors tool swap; food trucks; live music and more. The American College of the Building Arts is a non-profit, four-year liberal arts college dedicated to educating the next generation of building artisans. The event is free and open to the public.

Adult Painting Workshop: Capturing the Clouds

Deborah Meyer will instruct adults ages 18 and up to paint skies using oils or acrylics in this 2-day landscape painting workshop that includes painting techniques such as scumbling, glazing, and color theory. Lowcountry Figurative Workshop with nationally acclaimed oil painter Daryl Urig. The adjunct professor from the University of Cincinnati will take you through all the steps to paint figures in a true-life Lowcountry setting. This comprehensive but compressed workshop will include how to use plein-air studies and photography to compose and finish a larger, more complex painting in the studio. Demonstrations and practical explanations will help the student to better understand color mixing of paints, creating a dynamic composition and lighting to place a model in a setting will be covered during this workshop. All mediums welcome, demonstrations will be in oil paint and drawing with a brush and painting knife. $165 includes model fee.

Transformative Art & Activism in a Global Context: Artist Talk by Indrani Nayar-Gall and Dance Performance by Cyrus Art Productions. In conjunction with the Conjoined Opposites exhibition in the Patrick Gallery, and continuing with the theme of displacement, artist Indrani Nayar-Gall will install an interactive piece, Losing Dawn, in the DiGiorgio Campus Center. This piece will be unveiled on Feb. 28 as part of this global learning event which will start in the main lobby of the DiGiorgio Center at 8 p.m. This event will begin with a performance by Cyrus Art Productions, Middle Passage Part I: Traveler, which focuses on the shifting location of black culture and the concept of the “other” within our society. Following this performance, Nayar-Gall will unveil Losing Dawn and speak about her work in Dina’s Place, also located in the DiGiorgio Center.

At Presbyterian College at 7:30pm - Le Hot Club of San Francisco plays the gypsy jazz music of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli and the original Hot Club de France. This unique jazz form recalls Paris in the 1930s and offers a swinging beat with a sweet melody. The Hot Club performs many of the original works by Reinhardt and Grappelli and incorporates original works by guitarist Paul Mehling and violinist, Evan Price. Other composers such as Claude Debussy and “Jelly Roll” Morton make appearances as well.
